SS & Gold-Filled Wire
Wire is described in terms of its gauge (thickness) and its temper (hardness). Hardness is the property of the metal that resists bending. Soft metals are pliable and easy to bend. Hard metals are stiff and hard to bend. Most wire is available as dead-soft, half-hard, or hard. Wire for jewelry making is typically soft or half-hard. Dead soft wire is extremely soft and pliable. Half-hard wire is slightly stiffer than dead soft wire.
Wire can be softened by annealing (heating). It is hardened by being hammered or pulled through a draw plate. Soft wire can be "work hardened" as it is manipulated or by applying friction, as with a polishing cloth. Wire that is overworked becomes brittle and can break.
SS & Gold-Filled Wire are a must-have for jewelry makers. Choose the appropriate wire for your project:
- Half-hard wire has some stiffness and retains its shape when bent. Half-hard wire is ideal for earrings, clasps and hooks.
- Dead-soft wire bends easily and will conform to almost any shape. Dead-soft wire is great for wire wrapping and making chain.
Precious metal wire is available at Let's Bead! in gauges 28 (thinnest) to 14 gauge (thickest) in round, half-round, and square shapes.
